TEETH WHITENING (BLOG BY DR.SADAF TOOTH-CARE)

                                        "TEETH WHITENING"

If you are not feeling confident enough with your teeth color and wants to whiten your teeth and brighten your smile, there is a solution for you and that is "Teeth Whitening".

Teeth Whitening, also known as Teeth Bleaching,is a simple and harmless procedure.

TEETH WHITENING OPTIONS:

There are many ways to whiten the teeth.Below are some of the products to put the shine back in your smile:

1.TEETH WHITENING TOOTHPASTES:

Whitening toothpastes generally works through mild abrasives that scrub the teeth. Many also contain ingredients like hydrogen peroxide to dissolve stains.

These toothpastes can mildly lighten your teeth shade. You might not even notice any changes after using them.

One of the common problems with teeth whitening toothpastes is people may start to brush harshly to gain desired results which may lead to teeth structure damage and sensitivity.

3.PROFESSIONALLY APPLIED IN-OFFICE BLEACHING:

This procedure is also known as "Chairside bleaching".It is performed with a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide (HP) ranging from 25-40%.The procedure is monitored continuously by a dental practitioner and precautions are taken to minimize sensitivity and gum irritation by protecting the soft tissues with isolation (gingival barrier).

There are many whitening kits available for dentist to choose from depending on concentration of HP.Some whitening kits required laser to activate HP,while others have chemically activated peroxide for bleaching purposes. Results of both kits are identical.

In-office teeth whitening treatment will provide better and faster results, but its a bit expensive. The most common post-procedure complaint patient usually have is teeth sensitivity.Sensitivity usually gets resolved with time otherwise fluoride gel application on teeth is needed.New whitening kits in the market already have fluoride gel included separately.

3.AT HOME BLEACHING BY CUSTOM TRAY:

Your dentist can provide you with  custom-made trays for at-home whitening. An appropriate bleaching agent is then given to you and the dentist would guide you about how to use the trays at home.

The majority of bleaching research is on custom fitted take-home trays and shows high levels of safety.Patient can control the results through self-administration with some professional supervision. This procedure is less costly than In-office procedure with fewer side effects such as sensitivity or oral soft tissue irritation.

Results of At-home teeth whitening with custom made trays are not as instantaneous as the In-office treatment.Patient can excessively wear trays leading to sensitivity.

4.OVER THE COUNTER (OTC) TEETH WHITENING PRODUCTS:

Over the counter (OTC) teeth whitening products are readily available online and in local markets. They contain low concentration of HP as compared to the products used in In-office treatment. They are available in the form of prefabricated trays,paint-on gel, whitening strips, toothpastes and mouthrinses etc. Most of the products require their application over a 2-week period to see a change in color in 1-2 shades.

These products are easily available, least expensive and have high degree of safety.

Lack of professional supervision can result in adverse effects or mismanaged expectations. Prefabricated trays are not custom-made so they may be uncomfortable.People with crowded teeth may see poor results.

   WHO SHOULD GET TEETH WHITENING?
